Biological treatment

After the physical purification of wastewater, the biological or secondary treatment follows. In this stage the organic material  also called the carbon pollution load is broken down. Various types of micro- organisms including bacteria use the organic material as food.

Microorganisms break organica matter down in an oxygen -rich environment , in two kinds of processes.
Oxidation of organic material results in the formation of predominantly mineral substances, CO2 and nitrogen gas.
Biosynthesis converts the organic material into new cell material which is removed by sedimentation or membrane filtration . A third removal mechanism that plays an important role in a biological treatment is the ability of the biomass (sludge) to adsorb substances. This also allows non-biodegradable substances to be removed , such as heavy metals and pesticides.

In a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) the successive process steps take place in the same reactor . First, contaminated water is fed into the reactor, after which it is treated in several steps, depending on the substances to be removed . Ultimately, the process is stopped whereby sludge is allowed to settle and the above effluent is discharged . An SBR system is flexible in use which makes this system very suitable for varying pollution load and waste water composition. SBR systems are used in all kinds of embodiments .
Due to the great flexibility and simplicity, the AAQUA-SBR  is known as a very reliable biological treatment for industrial waste water streams .
